Overseas credit union voluntary work

Supporting overseas credit union voluntary projects

At Moore Ireland, we back ourselves and we back the issues that matter. We believe in supporting initiatives that make a real difference, both locally and globally.
Every year, Moore Ireland contributes to a wide range of causes. One programme we are particularly proud of is our partnership with the Irish League of Credit Unions Foundation (ILCUF). This collaboration has taken our team to Belize, Ukraine and Albania, where we have worked on projects that strengthen communities and create lasting impact.

Our partnership with ILCUF

Since 2015, Moore Ireland has been a strategic partner of the Irish League of Credit Unions Foundation, the charitable arm of the Irish Credit Union movement. Their mission is clear:

“To alleviate poverty in developing countries by supporting credit unions, their representative bodies and other co-operative organisations as a means for socio-economic development through the provision of financial and technical assistance.”

Through this partnership, we provide funding and expertise to help credit unions in developing countries build resilience and deliver sustainable financial services to their members.

Albania

Credit unions have played a vital role in Albania’s economic recovery since the 1990s. In 2019, Moore Ireland provided technical assistance to one of the largest credit unions in Albania on governance, regulatory and strategy matters. Our lead partner, Brian Hayes, visited Tirana twice to meet with management, the board and Albanian regulatory authorities. In addition to pro-bono advisory and covering travel costs, Moore Ireland made a financial contribution to the Albanian credit union system.

Belize

In May 2016, the Irish League of Credit Unions Foundation was asked by IFAD and the Government of Belize to support the Belize Credit Union movement and the Belize Rural Finance Project. Moore Ireland was invited to participate, providing technical support to strengthen the internal audit function of the Belize Credit Union League (BCUL). In August 2016, Ciara, a lead consultant from our internal audit division, spent two weeks in Belize coaching BCUL staff to enhance their internal audit capabilities.

Ukraine

In 2017, Moore Ireland joined a project supporting the Ukrainian National Association of Savings and Credit Unions (UNASCU) as part of the Credit for Agriculture Producers initiative, in collaboration with ILCUF, the World Council of Credit Unions and USAID. Developing UNASCU’s internal audit system was critical for the sustainable operation of credit unions in Ukraine. In November 2017, two of our consultants spent two weeks in Kyiv, working closely with UNASCU staff to build internal audit capacity

Looking ahead: Sierra Leone (2025–2027)

Our next project focuses on building capacity within Sierra Leone’s credit unions to meet statutory audit requirements in a sustainable and high-quality way. This initiative will:

  • Strengthen the credit union movement in Sierra Leone
  • Enhance resilience against poverty
  • Enable credit unions to better meet the social and economic needs of their members

Guided by the principles of co-operation, equality, equity and mutual self-help, this project is about more than compliance. It is about empowering communities and creating opportunities for lasting change.
